Inspired by a chance drabble on the theme of Severus as a Marauder, I decided to explore what might have happened if he had been. So far, I've written three stories, each of them still in the 'how he might have gotten there' stage:
Fic # 1
Title: Sorted Out of Order
Characters: Severus Snape, Lily Evans
Rating: G
Length: ~1,000 words
Summary:
An eternity passed before they finally called his name. Once he sat down, Severus kept as still as he could on the hard little stool, wishing he could delay what was coming somehow. He’d never thought of Gryffindor, for her. Ravenclaw would have been fine. Hufflepuff, manageable, but Gryffindor?
Snippet:
“Whew,” a voice said, in his ear. The hat, surely. Mum had said it…talked. Severus’ fingers curled about the rim of the stool, but he refused to even think of being afraid of something that wasn’t alive.
“Wouldn’t go that far,” the hat said, smugly. “Children are so literal. At least you’ll be easy. You’d curse me right now, if you thought you could get away with it.” The hat shifted on Severus head, probably gloating. “Oh, and here, your mother was a Prince.”
“Wait,” Severus said, his eyes on Lily, betraying him. “Just you wait.”
Fic # 2
Title: The Truce
Characters: Lily Evans, Severus Snape, OFC, James Potter, Sirius Black
Rating/Pairing: Teen/PG-13, gen
Length: ~9,600 words
Summary: By the third week of Severus’ first year as a Gryffindor, he’s used to Potter and Black; can’t stand them, but can’t stand up to them, either. When they raise the stakes, he realizes he has no option but to raise them right back.
Snippet:
“Well, if you’re wishing, wish that lot in Hufflepuff,” Lily said, as Severus turned his attention back to his own telescope. “No, them over there.”
“Potter?”
“And Black,” Lily said. “They’re awful to us.” Severus, stiffening, knew what she really meant—that they were awful to him. “Why, just today—”
“Lily, would you look at this?” Severus moved back, bumping the telescope so that it swung away from the patch of sky they were supposed to be observing. “I’m not sure if I’m seeing what I should here.”
Fic # 3
Title: Snap On The Train
Characters: Lily, Severus, OFC
Rating/pairing: G, gen
Length: ~800 words
Summary: There's nothing like a good game for measuring a person.
Snippet:
“Why is it always about winning with you?” Vera shook her head. “How about reverse Snap? Just one game, please—”
“All right, all right.” Severus began to shuffle the deck again, careful to work fast. “And what do you mean, why is it about winning? What else is a game about for you?”
“Company…and fun.” Vera said, accepting the cards he dealt her. “Um—doing your best?”
“Yeah,” Severus said, unable to hold back a smile. “Right.”
