i wish i had found some way to explain the thing with fred's magic better. the way i saw it, fred's magic just gets away from him and the teddy changes.

Actually, this wasn't a problem. I assumed it was Fred's uncontrolled magic. I was just imagining another scenario, especially since George was conspicuously absent and there were shenanigans afoot. :-)
